Galactic Data Model

I am trying to do the examples using SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services (2006) by Brian Larson.

The example says to use GDS as the data source yet all I see is Adventure Works.

The tables for AW are not the same as the tables for GDS.

Is there something I need to do or does the DBA need to install something else.

Have you installed the Galactic database yet from the downloaded source code for the book? If not, run the 'Create Galactic Database.sql' script in the 'Galactic Database Install' folder. At the bottom of the script is the userid and password:

exec sp_addlogin N'GalacticReporting', N'gds', @.logindb, @.loginlang

In order to set up the data source, you must use this userid and password (unless you change it to something more convenient). See if that works for you and hollar if it doesn't.

functions

I need to do a LEAST() and Greatest() function in SQL query.

Is this possible in anyway shape or form?

Here is an example...

tblTable.oneID = 4
tblTable.twoID = 5

SELECT ... LEAST(tblTable.oneID,tblTable.twoID) FROM tblTable

and it returns 4. Or in the GREATEST function, it would return 5.

Please help.

Thanks in advanceI think i figured it out...

LEAST function = SELECT (CASE WHEN oneID < twoID THEN oneID ELSE twoID) as LeastOFtheTWO FROM ...

GREATEST function = SELECT (CASE WHEN oneID > twoID THEN oneID ELSE twoID) as LeastOFtheTWO FROM ...|||You are on the right track. Try the following for the least case:

select case when (a < b) then a else b end
from (select min(field1) as a, min(field2) as b from table) as abc

You're trapping a string of 5 single quotes and replacing with two single
quotes? Where does that come from?

Since I grab only 1 character at a time from the strip string, one final
replace is required, and the only way to put a single quote within single
quotes is to double them up.
The 5 should be 4 (I'm distracted by a bad movie)
Return Replace(@.String,'''','')
Good catch!

Function to remove accent in string

Hi,

Does anyone have a function which replaces accent chars from a string
with the non-accented equivalent? For example 'hpital' should return
'hopital'.

Thank you in advance. Is this so that you can compare differently accented strings? If so and if
you are using SQL2000 then there is no need actually to replace the accented
characters. Just use an accent-insensitive collation for your comparisons:

IF 'hpital'='hopital' COLLATE Latin1_General_CI_AI
PRINT 'YES'

This avoids an expensive update. Better still, if you can change the column
collation to be accent-insensitive then you can create an index on the
column to help with the comparison.

Otherwise you could replace the accented chars like this:

UPDATE YourTable SET col =
REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(
REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(
REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(
REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(
REPLACE(REPLACE(col COLLATE Latin1_General_CI_AI
,'a','a'),'b','b'),'c','c'),'d','d'),'e','e'),'f', 'f')
,'g','g'),'h','h'),'i','i'),'j','j'),'k','k'),'l', 'l')
,'m','m'),'n','n'),'o','o'),'p','p'),'q','q'),'r', 'r')
,'s','s'),'t','t'),'u','u'),'v','v'),'w','w'),'x', 'x')
,'y','y'),'z','z')

Again, this assumes you are using 2000. If correct case is important to you
then specify a case-sensitive collation in place of Latin1_General_CI_AI and
add nested REPLACE statements for all the upper-case letters too.

I tried changeing the column to be accent-insensitive as you suggest
and indeed it does work when using a simple SQL statement with a WHERE
clause (WHERE 'hpital'='hopital'). However, I am using freetext
search on this column and when I use CONTAINSTABLE there is no result
found for 'hopital' it only works for 'hpital'. Do you have any ideas
how I can get this to work without using a replace function?

Darren.

Good Morning,
I have a question.
Is there a function like ISNULL but for the space value(example ISSPACE)?

THANKSHi

There is no space function but you can compare directly or something like

RTRIM(<fld>) = ''

RTRIM can be affected by the version or compatibility level of SQL Server
you are using.

The SPACE(n) function will create a string of n spaces.

For all available string functions check out books online or

Good Morning,
I have a question.
Is there a function like ISNULL but for the space value(example ISSPACE)?
THANKS
To substitute some other value instead of a space you could use CASE:
CASE WHEN x<>' ' THEN x ELSE 'something' END
Or you could use NULLIF() in conjunction with ISNULL() or COALESCE():
ISNULL(NULLIF(x,' '),'something')
COALESCE(NULLIF(x,' '),'something')
All of these examples return 'something' if X is either a NULL or a space.

Full-text search

Hello, I have a full-text enabled field in my table has the following
content as an example:
"SQL Server is a comprehensive, integrated, end-to-end data solution
that empowers your people by providing a more secure, reliable, and
productive platform for enterprise data and BI applications. SQL Server

to information workers, reducing the complexity of creating, deploying,
managing, and using enterprise data and analytical applications on
platforms ranging from mobile devices to enterprise data systems."
My question: Is there a way to return only the text that follows a
keyword specified as a parameter in the select statement? for example
the above content would be selected if i search for "reducing" but i
would like to return in that case:
"reducing the complexity of creating, deploying, managing, and using
enterprise data and analytical applications on platforms ranging from
mobile devices to enterprise data systems." as that piece of text
follows the word "reducing"
Any ideas would be appreciated.

There is no good way of handling this. You can use charindex to identify
word boundaries but this doesn't work well for FreeText type searches. I
posted a tsql solution in the other newsgroups you also posted to.
